nadan chemmeen masala(prawns in spicy gravy)
This time I got another typical kerala dish for you with fresh prawns. I happened to see some fresh prawns at walmart one day and I could’nt resist from getting it as the mouthwatering taste of chemmeen curry from home was tempting me to buy it. Even though I did’nt get the full taste of our homely chemmeen it turned out to be good enough.Here is the recipe…..
Ingredients
1)fresh prawns(you may opt to buy the frozen ones but be careful not to overcook it as it becomes hard the more you cook it) 400grams
2)onions(cut to thin slices) 1 no
3)ginger(finely chopped) 1/2 “piece
4) garlic 4-5 pods
5)curry leaves 3 sprigs
6)coccum(kudam puli) 2 nos
7)green chillies 3 nos
8)cocconut (grated) 4tablespoons
9)redchilli powder 1/2 tsp
10) coriander powder 1tsp
11)turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
12)garam masala 1tsp
13) whole black mustards 1/2 tsp
14) cooking oil 4tsp
15) salt - to taste
method:
A)Wash prawns and drain water thoroughly B) On a pan add a tsp of oil and put the grated coconut in it and fry it until it turns brown. Set aside the coconut to cool and grind it to a fine paste adding little bit of water.C) Soak the coccums in a little warm water D) On a pan heat the oil and add mustards. E) When the mustard splitter add the ginger and garlic and after a few seconds add the onions , and curry leaves F) When it turns brown ,add the chilli, turmeric , coriander and the garam masala and heat it for 10 seconds.G) Add the prawns and coccum to this and mix thoroughly.H) Turn down the heat to low and cover it with a lid until the prawns are cooked H) Once the prawns are cooked add the coconut gravy ,salt and little bit of water.I) Bring it to boil and turn off the heat once the gravy is thickened.J) Garnish with the green chillies and serve hot.
